Normand Subsea

Project at a glance

i-Tech 7 has successfully completed a high speed, high definition pipeline General Visual Inspection (GVI) for BP, West of Shetland from the Normand Subsea, using a Hercules Workclass ROV.

Highlights

The project yielded a number of successes including:

  • Faster data acquisition and reporting delivery
  • Reduced onshore reporting costs
  • Reduced POB Offshore by 4 (reduction levels are scope specific)
  • Introduction of automated survey data processing
  • Early deployment of Machine Vision technology
  • Standardised skid system deployed for flexibility and ease of transfer between vessels and regions

Solution

Achieving a max speed of 4.5 km/h, i-Tech 7’s Fast Digital Imaging (FDI) solution reduced the time required for the inspection by 10 days when compared to traditional video inspection.

This saved an estimated 158.5m3 of vessel Fuel and reduced the CO2 footprint of the operation by 490t.
Applying a streamlined workflow process and lessons learned from the previous campaign, reduced the processing and reporting delivered to BP by 35% compared to 2018.

The reduced data volume speeds up traditional processing times and reduced the number of personnel required offshore by 4 in 2019.

The first phase of Machine Vision and automated survey processing was also introduced on this years campaign, which will enhance the efficiency of future campaigns in AGT & NS regions.

Scope of Work

The objective of the inspection was to record and quantify the overall condition of over 290km of pipeline at high speed capturing all pipeline events and anomalies such as field joints, anodes, free spans, damage and debris, to allow assessment by integrity engineers.

Worksites

The MSV Normand Subsea was used to complete all offshore operations.
